On August 30, 1920, the S-5--the Navy’s newest, largest and most modern submarine--left Boston on a combination recruiting trip and shakeout tour. As the sub was performing a simulated "crash dive," the 231-foot-long hull suddenly started to fill with water. Four minutes later, she was on the ocean floor, 180 feet down. DEEP SEA DETECTIVES draws on survivor’s accounts and naval files to reveal what happened next. With no way to signal for help, and with pumps unable to keep up with the rush of the incoming water, the captain had to take desperate measures to save his crew.
